In Focus: "Navigating Through the Fog" (October, 2023 Newsletter)

Navigating Through the Fog

In the quite darkness before the sun began to peek over the surrounding mountains, I made my way along the banks of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park. Fog had descended over the river during the night, and I could barely make out the shapes of the trees in the distance.

I was hoping to photograph elk crossing the river in the early morning light, and when

I arrived where I hoped the elk would cross, I sat down on the riverbank, and waited patiently. The river was eerily quiet, but the sound of elk bugles echoed from every direction. I kept my eyes focused on the riverbank and surrounding landscape, looking for any sign of movement.

Finally, the sun began to rise, and the light began to break through the foggy mist, as if it were a halo, illuminating the Snake River. As the darkness slowly began to fade away, a herd of elk, led by a large bull, emerged from forest and cautiously stepped out onto the foggy riverbank, surveying the river before them. As the elk slowly entered the cold water the fog surrounded them like a protective blanket, and they began to effortlessly make their way across the river.

Photographing wildlife and nature is like navigating through a fog; you never know what you will find. You set out on your journey with a plan and an open mind, unsure of what might await you. You have a goal in mind, like capturing a particular animal, such as an elk crossing the Snake River, or getting a shot of the moon setting behind a mountain. But as you explore the landscape, you’ll often find yourself stumbling upon unexpected things that you didn’t plan on, such as poor lighting, unexpected weather, or wildlife just not cooperating. You have to be patient and pay attention to the details. It takes early mornings and sometimes late nights to capture that special moment. You may have to move around, trying to capture the best angle or the most interesting perspective. You may have to be creative to get the shot you want, taking risks and learning from your successes and failures. But when you finally get that perfect shot, the thrill of your accomplishment makes it all worth it. Photographing wildlife and nature is like navigating through a fog; you never know what you will find, but the journey to get there is an adventure in itself.

"Ghosts Swimming in the Snake River"

The Snake River was shrouded in a thick fog, the kind that muffles all sound and obscures vision. I was out at sunrise, hoping to photograph the otters that frequent the area, but unfortunately the otters had other plans and never showed up.

As the sun began to shine through the fog, it created a surreal, ethereal scene. It was like a painting come to life. In the center of that painting a flock of American pelicans appeared in the fog like ghosts swimming in the river.

The pelicans moved slowly and gracefully, as if choreographed in perfect harmony. It was like they were dancing, a beautiful ballet that was only visible for a few moments before they’d disappear back into the fog.

As the sun continued to rise, the fog began to clear and I was able to clearly see the true beauty of the pelicans before they flew off.
